Yesterday, the Sydney Development Circle Network gathering, was the occasion
for the final workshop to be conducted by world famous, Conflict Resolution
guru, Dr Stella Cornelius, now 87, Founder and Co-Director of the Conflict
Resolution Network. Check out the website. What a treat and a priviledge for
all of us gathered. Lynnette Symons of the Conflict Resolution Network, and
ICAA members, Carol Vale, Sally Fitzpatrick, John and Elaine Telford, shared
scenario presentations around Indigenous and crosscultural experiences where
conflict resolution processes were called for. Stella, engaged the whole group
in dialogue around applying CR processes to the various situations. Processes
highlighted included, finding a place of common ground from which to start,
hearing all the stake-holders, in a 'both-and' / 'win-win' approach, and the
critical need for collaboration and consultation. Sound familiar? One of the
great things about the SDC is that it brings together experienced and
non-experienced folk, the majority of whom are young! A number of other ICAA
members were in attendance, and ICAA is playing a quiet and growing role in this
great new organisation. The Sydney Development Circle, is a network of people
passionate about community development in all of its forms and on the ground
applications. It is coordinated and inspired by ICAA colleague, Lucy
Hobgood-Brown.

BANGLADESH:
Location: Dhaka
Aziz did a facilitation service for Concern Worldwide in strategic visioning. He
experienced a lot and learned by doing in real life situation. Oliver from
Concern Worldwide Bangladesh and Aziz from ICA Bangladesh discussed about the
PSP training and set the date 4-6 November.
Dhaka ICA faculty is preparing for
providing the in-house combine GFM and PSP for its 20 staffs. Dhaka ICA
expressed its high appreciation for ICA Australia's donation for ICA Bangladesh.
In a meeting on Friday 21 September, Dhaka ICA members made a note of thanks for
Richard and Maria maguire's and Julie and John's efforts in raising and donating
money and a computer for ICA work in Bangladesh. Dhaka ICA members acknowledged
that ICA Australian colleagues' big support in this critical time would
strengthen Dhaka ICA to develop its own base.
Bangladesh Mohila Ainjibi Samity
expressed their interest to get ICA's ORID and Workshop methods training. One of
our guardians Prof. Dr. Hakim Sarker passed this message to Dhaka ICA members.
Dhaka ICA expects to offer the training after ramadan fasting month
hopefully.

JAPAN:
Location: Japan Kenya and Peru
2008 7th Human Development Conference
Larry Philbrook flowed into Japan and
helped facilitate a GFM Action Planning with ICA Japan staff and four volunteers
from their Spiraling Joy Team, towards a one year plan for assisting in the
preparation of the 2008 Conference on Unlocking the Potential to Create a New World Together, in Atami Japan, near Tokyo, from 11 to15 November 2008.
We took
a pre-look at the conference dynamics and proposed a number of pre-conference
training sessions for November 8 and 9. Afterwards he lead a one day training
session with ICA Japan staff on community development, and then went on to do a
three day facilitation session with his client in Shin-Yokohama.
Kenya Massai
Transformation Activities
Wayne visited ICAs JICA funded project in Kenya Massai
leadership training, water provision, and agriculture training project, ecstatic
with the projects successes. After monitoring the project, he spent time with
the Isinya staff and Mr. Mutiso leading a five year visioning session, helping
with a search for property for a possible ICA Kenya Kajiado training center came
from the Vision session, and catalyzing a GFM Action Planning session to commit
to sending 25 people to the 2008 conference! And upon returning, ICA Japan
attended a video conference with ICA Insinyas Massai people, live for nearly 2
hours!
Peru Earthquake Emergency Aid
Kaoru Ito went a second time to Peru after
successfully getting an additional grant of about 210,000 in Emergency Aid for
supplying food to 1200 families and housing for over 1050 temporary homes in the
heart of the disaster area. Kaoru works with the ICA Peru team, and they will
receive three months of funding while they deliver the necessary items and offer
community leadership training focused upon rebuilding the lives of the
communities affected.

NEPAL:
Location: Janakpur
ICA Nepal conducted 2 training from Sept.18-22 for staff of Lalgadh Hospital
located about 300 km east of Kathmandu. The first training is on ToT and second
on Facilitation Skills. Altogether 35 staff participated in the programme.
Doctors, nurses, research officers, community mobilisers took part in this
programme. Dr. Krishna B. Lama, one of the participants remarked that this
training enabled him to think in a new way and he felt paradigm shift in his
outlook to community and his patients.

PERU:
Location: 100 Valleys Project
Kaoru Ito has arrrived from ICA-Japan with the 250,000 dollars from the Japanese
Government for the earthquake relief program to the south of Lima in Chincha
Alta where thousands of families experienced the collapse of their mud brick
homes. The ICA-Peru staff now faces the challenge of organizing the communities
to select 60 promoters who we will train to organize the families into teams of
five for clearing the lots of all of the rubble, and then the construction of
2,250 temporary homes. We have just 14 weeks to get the full results of that
many cleared lots, homes built and restored neighborhoods, all done with the
volunteer work of the residents themselves. It's a great demonstration of ICA
methods tackling a big challenge.

We have all been quite deskbound this week except Clare, who is on holiday.
Martin has been writing up earlier facilitation work and preparing for the next
lot, Amelia has been doing much the same and looking for funding for the Youth
programme, Jonathan has been working on a proposal to DFID with 7 African ICAs,
we gave our input on ICAI's proposed charitable objects, our latest Newsletter
came out....

UNITED STATES:
Location: Chicago Illinois
Seven parents graduated from a Life Skills Development course this past
Tuesday. Job preparation skills that included searching online, filling out
applications, and practice interviews boosted the confidence of these teenage
mothers who are wards of the state.
These mothers are also graduates of the
Learning Basket Parent Training program. Thanks to the collaborative work of
ICA-USA The Learning Basket, the parent teen center, Chicago Public Libraries
and Christopher House, a local family resource center, these mothers are
creating a foundation of skills necessary for their transition into independent
living. The Life Skills Development course is part of the Penny Severns Summer
Family Literacy Grant. Funding for the Penny Severns Summer Family Literacy
grant was awarded by the Illinois State Library ISL, a Division of the Office of
the Secretary of State.
The Learning Basket Parent Training program also attended
a Chicago Public School open house to recruit participants for the fallwinter
semester. Fourteen parents signed up for the twelve week course that will
include parent training, home visits, and field trips. The program will be
bilingual Spanish and English led by two parent facilitators who were also
graduates of the program from previous years. This program was made possible by
a grant from the Illinois State Board of Education.

ICAI:

Katie, Mike and Sarah Farina returned from last week's training in Toronto. It was great to see the ICA methods in action, and Duncan living up to his reputation as an excellent facilitator! Also thoroughly enjoyed meeting and building relationships with everyone at ICA Canada and Associates.
Sarah Farina and Michael were back in Ontario for most of this week, participating in an HIV/AIDS meeting in Haliburton.
In Montreal, ICAI reviewed and discussed our Human Resources Policies and Procedures that will soon be finalized and adopted.
Funding and communications outreach continues. Touched base with Garnet Banks and Mohan in Australia. Continued to push ahead with conference funding and planning, including regular calls with Japan. Collaboration with Wayne Marshall Jones on our amazing video project for release later this Fall.
