Global Buzz Report: August 2014

ICAI Board Report:

The ICAI Board is happy to report that there are currently several ways for members to get involved in global activities:

We're still accepting nominations for the ICAI Working Group on Global Conferences. We're looking for experienced conference folks interested in helping to solicit and prepare solid proposals for the December GA vote on the 2016 global conference location. Please let us know if you or someone you know fits the bill by mid-August.

Next up, the design team is now inviting you to express an interest and ask any questions you have about the Global Archives Research Assembly (GARA), online and in Chicago in September. Please refer to Martin's email from July 24, 2014 for more information.

Another reminder that the 2014 ICA European Gathering in Spain is opening up registration soon, with the event itself happening in November 2014. For more information email: info@iac-es.org

And finally, we're also looking for people interested in joining the ICAI Board Member Nominations Committee. We'll be looking for 3 new ICAI Board Members for January 2015 and would like to put together a small committee of people to manage the nominations process. If you're interested in joining the team, please email Staci Kentish, ICAI Board Secretary, at staci.kentish@gmail.com by mid-August.

AUSTRALIA:

Appointment as Executive Director for ICA Tanzania

Dear Charles, Hello others

Welcome, Congratulations on your appointment as the new Executive Director for Tanzania. Although I am in Sydney Australia, we all feel very connected. We hope the on-line communications can work well for you.

My colleagues and I are really keen to keep very linked with the ICAs in Africa, and the wonderful work that is being done, via email, Skype calls etc.

One of the ways we are keeping this happening, is via the ICA’s global magazine, Wind and Waves. I trust you have seen this magazine, if not just check out the ICAI website. We can also send you e-copies. The August edition will be published shortly.

We would love you and other colleagues in Africa to start now to think what they might contribute to the next edition in December. The focus will be on mentoring and coaching in ToP methods, but all kinds of stories and articles are most welcome. We really want a lot of input from Africa!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please let me know if you would be able to contribute to this next edition.

Wishing you and all our colleagues, the best for your work and health.

BANGLADESH:

ICA Bangladesh has created a zakat fund called ICA Bangladesh Zakat Fund (ICABZF) this year to support the distressed and needy people of ICA Bangladesh's project areas. On July 24th some of the zakat fund was distributed among the ICA Bangladesh's Phulki project street children in Dhaka.

ICA staff visited Phulki Street children project in Dhaka on 24th July and had a meeting with the school teacher and students. Aziz spent some time at the project site to learn about the class schedule, pedagogics and student needs.

ICA members are celebrating Eid in their home towns. Chandpur-based members met several times among themselves and with Ghoramara villagers to discuss the school project and explore a possible local partnership to support the project components. Two community leaders were given a small fund to assist in admin activities in this regard. An urgent request has been made by the community to have electricity connected to the school, given the high temperature in the tin-shed building. The building also needs repair work. It will be necessary to raise funds immediately for these projects.

The faculty team is trying to get a short in-house training contract with Robi-one of the largest cell phone operators in Bangladesh. Aziz and Zaki are making efforts in this regard.

ICA Bangladesh is very thankful to ICA Australia, and specially to our overseas mentors Maria and Richard for sending some fund to support office and staff budget deficit.

NEPAL:

From the 14th to 20th of July 2014, Ishu Subba and Sarala Timsina participated in 7 days of training on Fund Raising and Communication, conducted by the South Asian Fund Raising Group (SAFRG) in Delhi. The major purpose of the training was to build the capacity of the ICA Team. The training focused specifically on fundraising and donor communication. The visit was helpful for building networks, and sharing ICA tools within an international platform. Along with ICA Nepal, the training was attended by many diverse groups representing NGOs based in rural India who work for farmers empowerment, and also NGOs working in the field of women's empowerment: health and nutrition, promoting technology for women, Practical Action Nepal, and so on.

Apart from this, we provided facilitative resources to various CBOs and clubs such as Rotaracts, Rotary were regular program attendees of ICA Nepal in July.

Furthermore, we have a speaker, Don Antonio Macias, author, entrepreneur, creator of associations for training and Development Center Self Employment, and Rodrigo Delclaux, historian, translator and voluntary contributor for several years, with experience in intercultural mediation.

At the inaugural meeting Catalina Quiroz Child attended, who along with Fernando Garcia, outgoing director, have been for many years at the head of IACE and whose initiatives have promoted administrative support, institutional growth and prestige across Europe. We are also accompanied by two project leaders who have been successful in obtaining EU funding for youth programs: Iman and Aurelia Gomez Boujnani. They will not rest on their success, but seek alternative sources of funding in order to increase the autonomy of IACE and the ability to innovate in collaboration with other Spanish institutions. We were also joined by Natalia San Juan, Uruguayan and Chilean journalist, who will provide us with great experience of social networks, necessary to disseminate the values and potential activities of IACE.

Guided by the vision for 2008 - 2015, and with the support of this new directory, members of the organization will continue to participate in international projects while pursuing national funding to enable us to expand the area of transformative action. Already, we are awaiting decisions on the "Empowerment Can Do" project, which would involve youth in a number of European countries, and prepare for the meeting of ICA Europe, to be held in Spain next fall. Finally, we announced the upcoming release of "The Art of Focused Conversation" in Castilian translation, a great resource in participatory methodologies, and in which IACE participated in the editing process.
