Week ending: Saturday 2010 02 13

Location: Dhaka

On February 11, Zaki and Jahangir visited to the Street Children project site in Khilgaon, Dhaka. The children received a Life Skill training from Jahangir and a physical exercise training from Zaki.

Zaki visited the SSRC office on February 10 to discuss the terrorism research project.

A member database was developed by Zaki to facilitate office operations. This measure will ensure an effective communication system, which will facilitate members’ active engagement in the activities of the organization.

On February 8th, Manik and Mizan visited the ICA Ghoramara Human Development project site. The construction of the school building has now been granted by the DC District Commissioners Office for the Chanpur Ghoramara project. We would like to thank all of the individuals who helped us acquire this permission.

Aziz and Zaki are still working on the accounting, auditing and office management system. Habib and Peter continued working on improvements for the new ICAB web site.

Bill Staples continued work with the Yukon Public Service and returned to Toronto.

Jo Nelson and Aziz Rahman facilitated a workshop with the Kitchener-Waterloo Crime Prevention Council. Since this is the focus of Aziz's academic work, it was a great opportunity for him and for us to engage him directly in our work.

Jo Nelson is beginning work with the James Bay Cree, a regional Tribal Council covering 12 communities in a large area of Northern Quebec. This initiative will enable the James Bay Cree to develop models for self-governance.

John Miller taught another workshop in our long series of courses with The Kitchener-Waterloo Community Care Access Centre. They are developing a core group of highly trained international facilitators.

We received a message from a woman at the Regina, Saskatchewan, Board of Education. She has been seconded to do training with the Saskatchewan Police College and was very pleased to be able to successfully use the ToP focused conversation method in that context.

Our internal office move is nearly complete and we are all enjoying the new workspace.

We are now offering on-line facilitation to organizations and communities as part of our service. Please visit our web site at http://ica-associates.ca for the service descriptions. As we learn and develop our capacities and infrastructure, this will become a major area of growth for us as more organizations are seeking ways to minimize travel and time expenses. Jo is integrating this service in her work with the James Bay Cree. With communities spread over a large region, this new measure will enable a new level of connectivity.

Our work with the ToP Virtual Facilitation Team enters a new year with a new team charter, reorganized work groups and new participants. Jo Nelson and Ester Mae Cox will be the co-chairs of this initiative. Wayne Nelson and Jean Watts will coordinate work on the process of documenting ToP Design Patterns, clarifying the required virtual functionality and identifying appropriate virtual tools that can be used to facilitate events using ToP methodologies.

This week, Jesusa Aburto and Gloria Santos coordinated the staff members who were responsible for the graduating of 30 new community leaders. They all spent an exciting three weeks together in Azpitia. Luis Tarazona stepped up to the role of facilitator, conducting four of the sessions, as Pedro Aburto and Alex Borjas were in and out of the Azpitia. They left to do two different Implementation Programs, one in the north and one in the south of Peru.

We now benefit from more flexibility in our staff, as Yanina Chuquizut completed her second AVANZA PERU program and is now occupying a leadership role. Maria Claros and Hernan Heredia completed their first AVANZA PERU session and are now also ready to occupy leadership roles.

To cap off the week, on of our sponsors requested that we immediately begin an intensive training process across most of the Department of Moquegua, starting with two more AVANZA PERU programs. This will be followed by an extended process of implementation leading to the creation of their own demonstration community. This will perhaps lead to a training school with a trained faculty, which will be lead by us.

It seems that AVANZA PERU will soon be going on-the-road;  a dream we’ve had for many years.  We now have a growing staff which is prepared to fulfill that dream.  We are all very excited about the future!

ITERLENG ICA South Africa:

Location: Johannesburg

On February 6th and 7th, Fisser conducted a training session on the Foundations for Personal Effectiveness workshop, at Elijah Barayi Memorial Training Centre in Yeoville, Johannesburg.  A total of 180 participants attended the training, which utilized ToP methods. This workshop constitutes Phase 1 of the Bursar Development Programme for tertiary education students, offered by Palesa Corporate Consultants and sponsored by other organisations. The Bursar Development Programme aims to empower individuals to take charge of their lives and accept accountability for their development, to learn to interact and function optimally within a team, and to maximise their effectiveness and contribution within the broader spheres of their lives.

The objective for the Foundations for the Personal Effectiveness is focused on the individual and growth. The program is about starting a new journey, facing new challenges and seizing new opportunities.  The intention of the workshops is to provide the individuals with a moment to reflect on their origins and future, and to inspire them in actively accepting responsibility in the shaping of their future.  The workshop aims to impart the skills required for the effectively management of oneself and of one’s responsibilities and relationships within a new environment.
