Weekending: Saturday 2007 06 23

CANADA:

Location: Toronto

This has been an exciting week for Listen the Drumming at ICA Canada.  We received a very generous donation from the Don Valley Rotray Club, which was presented to Liz Donnery, Derek Strachan, and myself at a breakfast meeting on Thursday morning. We were also informed that Stephanie Nolen, the Globe and Mail's HIV AIDS in Africa correspondent has accepted our invitation to be our keynote speaker for our event in November.

Location: Youth as Facilitative Leaders

Last week we held a strategic planning session for the programme.  New volunteers merged with long-time advocates of YFL to further develop a vision of where we wanted to be by 2010 and begin forming strategic directions. The meeting was a great success, with a YFL Advisory Committee formed by the participants of the meeting in order to continue to support YFL's growth within Ontario and beyond.

MALAYSIA LENS International

Location: Denver USA

As LENS International Malaysia is now in Denver, USA, we report on an organization we support while in the US - The Institute for Consensus Action.

On 7 June 15 colleagues with one paid staff member met to create a strategic plan for the near term. Discussion focused around building up and expanding the successful neighborhood programs in lower income neighborhoods in transition, some with increasing number of immigrants from Africa and Asia. A representative from the housing development which sponsored ICA programs from last year was present for the planning. Proposals have been submitted to continue this work.

Another focus for the group is equipping facilitators to fill the growing demand for facilitators in both the neighborhood and community group programs. To that end a coaching and mentoring program will begin in July to take ToP grads and mentor them into experienced capable facilitors. Model client groups, trainees and mentors are being matched to move this program forward.

NEPAL:

Location: National

This week ICA Nepal had quite a busy week. We submitted a proposal to IFAD, Italy and we are preparing a proposal to construct a community hospital in the far western part of Nepal. For the community hospital a team visited the area for need assessment and feasibility study. We will be submitting this proposal to the Japanese Embassy here in Nepal.

We are also continuing the repair work of a drinking water project that we completed a few years ago but disrupted due to conflict in the country.

ICA Nepal agreed to work with Rotary Club to popularize the importance of Constituent Assembly which we are having in 6 months time. We are organizing a series of interactions and survey in 10 districts nationally.

Recently we also released the book on 'Civil Society Index' which we are promoting locally and globally. This week we also sent newsletter and books published by ICA Nepal to various organizations including ICAs around the world.

We also managed to arrange scholarships for three youths for two months long skill based training being organized by the government from today.

We are also glad to share with you that Global Forest Coalition approved our project on 'Underlying Causes of Deforestation' through which we will work with the indigenous communities to protect their rights on forest and will organize training and national level workshop. We will be starting this project from July 1.

On June 21, the Japanese Embassy team carried out an impact study of the project supported by them few years ago. We were amazed by the responses of the local women. Some of the responses were as follows- "the work has brought a lot of changes in our life. Now we feel as a leader in the community".- "now we have no problem of getting small loan, we have now cooperative".- "5 years ago, only about 40 percent women could read and write, but now more than 99 percent are literate".- "we have started operating a number of business after we attended the training".

Thanks to ICA Japan, TUC, MOFA and other donors who have made it possible to transform people.

PERU:

Location: 100 Valleys Project

The staff prepared a six month calendar of program events and designed the marketing campaign to go with it.  Jesusa Aburto and Gloria Santos are preparing a major proposal to facilitate a 2-month child nutrition study and development plan for six communities in the Mala valley, adjacent to Azpitia where the ICA training center is located.  This will open up a whole new phase of ICA work leading into the 10-year 100 Valleys Project.
