ICA ASSOCIATES INC. (Canada)

Jo Nelson and Nathen Bernshaw, one of our associates, participated in the IAF conference in Portland. ICA had a booth at the conference as well as Jo leading two workshops.

Erwin Allerdings, an asociate, taught Group Facilitation in Regina and Facilitated Planning in Saskatoon. Both courses were sponsored by Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology.

Bill Staples is in Weyburn, Saskatchewan to begin work on a large scale, long term development of a health promotion project. Weyburn is the home of Tommy Douglas, architect of Canada's health care system. The local health authority wants to make their district a national leader in health promotion and has asked Bill to begin work on a design that will engage a large cross section of the people in the area.

Big celebration. ICA Associates will be debt free at the end of March this year. It has been a long struggle to build a sustainable, profitable organization that makes a significant impact on organizations and provides core funding for our not-for-profit work as ICA Canada.

KENYA:

Last year we developed a proposal for titled “Leadership Training and Integrated Development Programme.” The programme aims at training community residents in 10 villages in Ikalaasa Location in Machakos District in:
  • Sustainable Agriculture Leadership and Facilitation skills and strategic planning
  • HIV / AIDS prevention
  • Gender and Para – Legal

The programme has a component of training people living with HIV / AIDS on Positive Self Management so that they can effectively manage their own HIV / AIDS conditions. The area chosen for the project is 64 Kilomiters from Machakos Town and about 140 Kilomiters from Nairobi. The area is prone to drought and is inhabited by subsistence farmers. There are very few development agencies operating in the area, and that was one of the reasons why the area was chosen, for the ICA Kenya has an operational policy on HIV / AIDS focused on giving support to People Living With HIV / AIDS.

The programme proposal was submitted to Bread for the World Germany and funding has been approved for three years. On a recent project site visit to Machakos, the head of the Kenya Desk at Africa group at Bread for the World, Mrs. Ellen Guttzler said “The ICAK methods in dealing with communities are very unique, because they empower people”.

She visited Muthetheni Location where ICAK was in the process of completing a three-year project funded by Bread for the World. She was quite happy with the project that she saw being implemented by the community residents, after being trained by ICAK. As we continue to implement the new project, the partnership with the local communities, we will continue to pay special attention to the role played by women. In celebrating the 20th anniversary, the American Ambassador to Kenya, then M/s Aurelia Brazeal said, “The majority of ICAK programme participants are women. It is important for development professionals to remember the importance of Gender. Failure to consider women, their particular roles, their contribution to the economy and their constraints on their time and activity lessons, women ability to contribute to the development. “ I commend ICAK’s focus on women participation”

PERU:

Location: 100 Valleys

The AVANZA PERU staff took the particpants on a great field trip to the Catholic University in Lima where they encountered about 20 environmental projects which provided huge motivation to start local businesses to promote these energy and water projects.  In the afternoon they toured a local industry with advanced metal processes all using local technologies.   The consciousness and leadership confidence of the local leaders in the program is growing at an amazing pace from their exposure to these economic insights combined with their daily training in TOP facilitation methods.

ICAI:

Location: Montréal

Another very busy week for ICAI. Worked on the Annual Report, Network Exchange, and web refresh. Also spent time on a variety of office matters such as computers, software, phone system, and liability insurance. Revised charitable status application and awaiting further legal review. Also touched base with Kirk Harris in Chicago.

Note that a number of key items remain on hold due to the ongoing delay in Lamberts work permit  such as further staffing, bank accounts transfer etc. Lambert and I are in daily contact with Montreal International about this, and continue to move forward.
